about

November 7, 2019- my musical brother and dear friend lost the battle to cancer. Cooper "Rooster" Smith was not only one of the best guitarists I've ever had the pleasure to play with and a collaborator in so many ways, but a true brother in spirit. He knew how to blast, he knew restraint- I miss him. This song wrote itself. It was in the ether, i just grabbed the words and put them together. I asked Amelia and Kevin "Bumpy" who were in his band Vicious Petals, to play their horns for me and I couldn't have been more pleased with how it turned out. The coda for this song was a chorus Coop and I had worked on years prior. We had a running joke we would put together a duo called "Rooster and Bull"...or "Bull and Rooster"...it was up for debate. So, it was a special pleasure to be able to utilize this part of a song we never were able to put down on tape. It was cathartic and life-giving to sing the coda at the top of my lungs, alone in a chapel and in Singerland. You may not have known Coop, but I know you have lost someone- I hope this song provides some comfort, knowing the sun will rise tomorrow, regardless of your will. You can take that to the bank.

lyrics

Hey Rooster, where did you go? I wake up every morning expecting to hear your crow. Over rooftops, and under old floorboards. Out in crowded streets and across lonely shores.

Did you see the sun- it's gonna rise at the top of the hill. It's going to rise regardless of my will.

Hey Rooster, are you among the stars? I peer with naked eye, but I can't seem to see that far. Playing the melody, that ignites a million suns. Out in the galaxy where the hymn unites as one.

Did you see the sun- it's gonna rise at the top of the hill. It's going to rise regardless of my will.

Hey Rooster, where did you go? I wake up every morning expecting to hear your crow. I'll still take the stage and I'll still sing the song, and when I close my eyes, you know I'm gonna hear you singing along.

Did you see the sun- it's gonna rise at the top of the hill. It's going to rise regardless of my will.

The sun is gonna rise at the top of the hill, it's gonna take your blues away.
